Mumbai: Jaikumar Mudhukar Gavade and Diandra Dudley Valladares emerged as the fastest as they went on to win the 100m on the opening day of the LIC sponsored 69th Maharashtra Athletic meet which got underway at the Mumbai University Pavilion ground, Marine Lines, here on Tuesday.

Quite familiar with the track Diandra raced from the other athletes with over 30 meters from the finish with a time of 11.50, while the Jaikumar from Pune fended off the challenge of .. to claim as the fastest in the men's section.

"I have won the race, but not content with timing," said Diandra who before the race had said that she was looking for 11.40. The Central Excises based in Belapur Diandra was off the blocks and was well ahead of her closest rival. Yes, less competition could be one of the reason but I feel that after the 70meter mark I failed to pick the pace and the timing shows it all," said St Mary's School, Mulund pass out Diandra.

The Thane sprinter quickly took off the blocks and led from start to finish to claim the gold medal in a time of 11.62 seconds. Pune District’s Siddhi Hiray had to settle for silver in 12.08 secs and the bronze went to Saroj Shetty of Mumbai City who finished in 12.15 secs.

"The timing is fine but it could have been better, but for the poor start, I had said champion Jaikumar after the race.

Son of a farmer in Phaltan near Pune, Jaikumar timed 10.62 well below his best time of 10.50, said the 25-year-old Jaikumar who is yet to find an employer. "I have no job, and looking for one in near future, thanks to my father who has been helping me," said Jaikumar who finished second in the last edition of the championship which was held in Pune last year.

Bhosale took the silver in 10.69secs and Thane District’s Kshitij Bhoite claimed the bronze in 10.81secs.

Pune hurdlers Paras Patil and Ankita Gosavi picked up the gold medals in the men’s 110 metres and women’s 100 metres hurdles respectively.

Earlier in the day, Nashik District’s youngsters Kisan Tadvi comfortably won the men’s 5000 metres as he finished well ahead of his compatriot Narendra Pratap Singh in 14:33.97 seconds. Arati Patil made it a one-two for Nashik as she won the women’s 5000 metres clocking a time of 18:00.69seconds.
