IPL 2019 debutants: Ashton Turner to Varun Chakravarthy, 10 rising stars who will make their IPL entry this year

India is currently gearing up for the 17th Lok Sabha elections which will be held from April 11. But, along with that, cricket fans will get to see the 12th season of Indian Premier League (IPL). The Indian T20 tournament has been a stage for the players (Indian and overseas) to shine and make their mark in the game of cricket.

Like the previous years, in 2019 too, some new players will be making their debut in the tournament, hoping to win hearts and gain entry into the national team. Here we take a look at 10 players (Indian and Overseas) who will be in focus on their debut league.

Ashton Turner

No one can forget this player who snatched the 4th ODI from India’s hands. Australian Ashton Turner will be making his IPL debut this year for Rajasthan Royals (RR). Turner was bought by the Royals for his base price Rs 50 lakh. But, after seeing what ability he possess, the Royals would rely on him in the middle-order after a forgettable last year.

Another Curran will make his way in the tournament. 20-year-old Sam Curran, the England all-rounder, is currently getting lot of popularity with his stunning game. Brother Tom Curran made his debut in IPL last year for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Sam was bought by King XI Punjab for Rs 7.2 crores though his base price was Rs 2 crore. Curran brother will be the first after Pathan brothers, to play for two different teams. There are also Pandya brothers who play for the same franchise, Mumbai Indians (MI).

West Indians are in demand this IPL. There are three top Windies players who will be making their debut this year. 22-year-old West Indian was named as one of the five breakout stars in cricket by ICC last year. Like the other country players, Hetmyer is a brilliant fielder and middle-order batsman. Owing to his popularity in the shortest format of the game, Virat Kohli-led Royal Challenger Bangalore (RCB) bought him for Rs 4.2 crore from his base price Rs 50 lakh.

Oshane Thomas

The West Indian pace bowler made headlines during the team’s India tour in 2018 as his pace bowling troubled Indian line-up in the limited-overs. The fast bowler will play for Rajasthan Royals who bought him for Rs 1.10 crore. Recently, during the 5th ODI against England, Thomas returned with his best figures 5 for 21, helping his side to draw the series.

Nicholas Pooran

Nicholas Pooran, the West Indian wicketkeeper-batsman is one of the future stars for his country. The power-hitter is in great form since 2018 after making headlines for smashing 24 off 54 balls in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) last year. Pooran was picked by Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) for Rs 4.20 crore from his base price Rs 75 lakh. The Punjab franchise will be relying on him for hitting big shots.

Varun Chakravarthy

Like every year, this year too, the IPL auction was in headline after uncapped Varun Chakravarthy became one of the most-expensive players bought at the auction. The spinner, who made his name in the Tamil Nadu Premier League, was taken by Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) for whopping Rs 8.4 crore. As he is known to bowl with seven different variations, he earned the tag of ‘mystery spinner’. He will play under the captaincy of Ravichandran Ashwin, who is himself a class spinner.

Shivam Dube

The Mumbai all-rounder is a finisher. Dube is another young lad who was picked by a big franchise for bigger amount. Skipper Virat Kohli-led side RCB picked him for Rs 5 crore. With RCB having two big-hitters in the opening spot, Dube will be perfect to bat at 5th or 6th position which will help him to contribute more and hit more sixes. Dube was in limelight in Ranji Trophy when he smashed 5 sixes in 5 balls off Swapnil Singh.

Prabhsimran Singh

After some intense bidding, the wicketkeeper-batsman Prabhsimran Singh was bought by Kings XI Punjab for Rs 4.8 crore. With KL Rahul already in-charge of gloves, Singh will be in focus with the bat. Singh is yet to play a first-class match but was in news for his 298 off 301 balls against Amritsar in the Punjab U-23 Inter-District Cricket Tournament.

Kamlesh Nagarkoti

Although he was picked by KKR last year for Rs 3.2 crore, he yet to play a game as he was ruled out of the tournament with a back injury. KKR has retained him and he is fit to make his debut. Nagarkoti was a key player helping India’s U-19 win World Cup in 2018. He’ll be one of KKR’s key pacer as he possesses clean-hitting ability down the order.

Prayas Ray Barman

Prayas Ray Barman is a leggie with a bag full of tricks. Barman caught attention during last year’s Vijay Hazare trophy where he grabbed 11 wickets at a stunning economy of 4.45. Barman also had an impressive domestic T20 league last month. With RCB going for him in the auction, Barman will get a chance to play alongside Yuzvendra Chahal. RCB bought him for whopping sum of Rs 1.5 crore.
