After representing India at the 23rd Summer Deaflympics at Samsun in Turkey and returning back with five medals including one gold, the Indian contingent of hearing impaired athletes expected a grand welcome but to their dismay, not even a single person was there to receive them. And now to protest the lack of recognition, the players and support staff refused to leave Delhi airport.
These players made the nation proud after they won 5 medals in total in Summer Deaflympics at Samsun. Speaking to media persons at the airport, the project manager Ketan Shah expressed disappointment at the absence of any official to receive the medal winners. On Sunday, Indian wrestlers won a gold and two bronze medals in the 23rd Summer Deaflympics at Samsun in Turkey.

“We also tried to get in touch with the Director General of the Sports Authority of India and Sports Minister Vijay Goel but they didn’t pay any heed. We had emailed them and informed them on July 25 itself that we will be coming on August 1 but we haven’t got any reply,” NDTV quoted Ketan Shah as saying.
The contingent of 46 athletes and support staff felt the apathy from the officials indicated that the government were not acknowledging their success at the Games held at Samsun, Turkey. Meanwhile, the athletes also wanted to speak to sports minister Vijay Goel, to apprise him of the situation. The Indian contingent participated in a total of eight disciplines at the games. And out of those we won medals in three. India won gold and bronze in wrestling, bronze in lawn tennis and silver in golf.
Virender Singh secured gold in the 74kg freestyle wrestling while Ajay Kumar and Sumit Dahiya bagged bronze medals in 65kg and 97kg respectively. Golfer Diksha Dagar clinched a silver while Prithvi Sekhar and Jafreen Shaik earned bronze in men’s doubles tennis event.
However, the athletes staged protest for over six hours before Dilip Singh, a project officer with SAI, reached the airport to receive them. The SAI official then took the players to Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and it has been told that they will be taken to Shastri Bhawan in the evening.
