Mumbai: Hoopers stunned defending champions Parle Boys in straight sets (25-18, 25-19) to advance into the semifinals of the Callan Cup Volleyball tournament, hosted by Bombay YMCA at Jhulla Maidan, Agripada, on Thursday.

The last year’s winners, who were given a bye into the quarterfinals, appeared rusty and were unable to show their mettle which had earned them the title last year. So much so they were up against confident Hoopers players, who blocked their all efforts at the net and then fought back by some intelligent placings and smashing (spiking) fruitfully.

Hoopers next take on hosts YMCA ‘B’, who after relishing a thrilling  win over Goregaon Boys in the pre-quarters on Wednesday, proved  just too good for Naval Boys and won 25-7, 25-10 to make the last four grade. Results: (Quarterfinals): Hopers bt Parle Boys 25-18, 25-19; Bombay YMCA ‘B’ bt Naval Boys 25-7, 25-10.
