Former Indian cricketer Jacob Martin is in a critical situation after meeting with an accident last month. Martin, who also played for Baroda team in Ranji, had road accident on December 28 and has been on the ventilator since. The 46-year-old cricketer suffered injuries to his liver and lungs.
His wife had appealed to BCCI for financial support and the latter issued Rs 5 lakh for Martin’s treatment. Baroda Cricket Association also granted Rs 3 lakh. “Once I came to know about the accident I tried to help Jacob’s family in every possible way,” Former BCCI and BCA secretary Sanjay Patel was quoted as saying by the Telegraph.
Patel also mentioned that he is taking efforts to raise funds for the cricketer. “I have spoken to a few well-wishers, including Samarjitsinh Gaekwad (member of the former ruling family of Baroda and former BCA president) who donated Rs 1 lakh, and accumulated around Rs 5 lakh for his treatment.
“The hospital bills have already crossed Rs 11 lakh, and at one point, the hospital had even stopped providing medicine. The BCCI deposited the amount directly and the treatment hasn’t been affected thereafter,” Patel told The Telegraph.
Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly also came out for the support of the ailing Martin. “Martin and I have been teammates and I remember him as a quiet, introvert-type of person…While praying for Martin’s speedy recovery, I’d like his family to know that they don’t stand alone, ” Ganguly told The Telegraph. Martin played 10 international matches for India. Under his captainship, Baroda lifted the Ranji Trophy title in 2001.
