2019 has finally arrived and people all around the world welcomed it with great zest and with full of excitement. While last year gave us memorable moments in world of sports like the ‘return of Djokovic’, Serena Williams’ and umpire banter at the US Open, we hope to see some clean and clear moments.
When talking about tennis, the game is getting popular day-by-day with some new players emerging victorious, putting behind the legends like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams. The year 2018 saw rise of some new stars in the grand slam tennis tournament namely Dominic Thiem, Borna Coric, Kevin Anderson, Naomi Osaka. While Osaka won her first-ever grand slam (US Open), there are few tennis stars who are waiting to hold the coveted trophies of tennis grand slams. Here we take a look at 5 top contenders who can win their first-Grand slam title in 2019:
Dominic Thiem, the Austrian, managed to reach his first Grand Slam final at the French Open opposite the King of Clay, Rafael Nadal. Though he was beaten by the Spaniard, it came as no surprise that he will be favourite to win the clay-court title in 2019. Thiem’s game is very-much suitable to clay. The bounce you get on clay is hard to manage but his power-hitting abilities make him favourite.
Zverev had a stunning breakthrough in the year-end as he emerged victorious in the ATP World Tour finals. This surely makes him a dangerous player and he could make his mark at the Grand Slam tournament. His game suits grass and as he has Ivan Lendl by his side (his coach), Zverev can be a new contender to the title.
The 2018 Wimbledon finalist, Kevin Anderson, has to be there in the list. He is an all-round player and could be dangerous and can challenge anyone with his powerful strokes. Anderson made two Grand Slam final appearances, failing to win either, and was impressive as he challenged both the winners and made them sweat to win.
Winning the year ending WTA Finals title without winning any of Grand Slam could be a shocker for any newbie but this only has made Svitolina a strong contender of winning a Grand Slam title this year. It is also to note that a slam-less WTA Finals winners have gone on to win the Australian Open in the following year (Caroline Wozniacki). Hence, it would be good to make Svitolina a contender for the year.
Barty, the top-ranked Australian player, had a superb year as she made it to the finals of Sydney International and was seeded at the Australian Open for the first time. She started in 2017 as a 325 ranked but rose to WTA rankings with her stunning performance. Playing her first Grand Slam at her home, Barty would surely have backing from the home crowd. For this year’s Australian Open, Barty is ranked inside the top-16.
