Bengaluru : He always led the country’s bowling attack from the front but Anil Kumble believes that as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team, his role will be in the “background” as it is the players who “come first”.

“It’s a huge responsibility. I have always put my hands up for any sort of challenge. The coach’s role is in the background, it’s the players who come first and that would be my approach. I am ready to take this role,” Kumble told mediapersons during interaction after BCCI officially made the announcement. It’s a great honour to be back in Indian dressing room in a different role,” Kumble said on his appointment.

Asked about his plans for the team, he said, “Strategy will be to win. There is still time to think about all that and sit with the players. I have a short and long-term plan for the upcoming series (against West Indies), but I cannot plan alone; I also need players to pitch in.” Responding to a query, Kumble said the team’s aim obviously will be to win the upcoming series against the West Indies.

“It is a bit early to speak on all that. Yes there is a certain plan. Obviously there is an immediate series coming up against the West Indies, and our aim is to win,” he said. Kunble, who ran a player management company was also asked on the tricky subject of conflict of interest and he said that he has discussed it with the BCCI.

“We have already discussed that. Whatever needs to be done will be done before I take up this role officially. That has been discussed and it has been very clear with BCCI,” he said. Kumble further said there is ample time left to think about planning and strategising.

‘Looking forward to working with Kumble, Sir’

New Delhi  : India’s Test Virat Kohli today welcomed new head coach Anil Kumble into to the team saying he was looking forward to the work with the legendary leg-spinner. “Heartiest welcome to @anilkumble1074 Sir. Look forward to your tenure with us. Great things in store for Indian Cricket with you ??” Kohli tweeted shortly after Kumble was appointed as head coach for a one-year term. Many former cricketers too welcomed the decision.

Kumble brings in a lot to the table and makes a good choice for the head coach. You don’t need a coaching degree, all you have to be is a good man manager.

To be honest, I would not have applied if I knew that Anil too had applied. These things happen. Not many would have handled the 2008 ‘Monkeygate’ incident better than Anil.

Anil to me is a very good choice. He is a good student of the game and that will help him in his new role. I have seen Anil from younger days. But, it is a bit strange that he has appointed for only one year. There is not much you can do in that much span.

I thought that Anil will be bowling coach and Ravi will take care of the batting. We have to see how Anil uses his immense knowledge of the game in coaching
