Mumbai : Two South Mumbai Chess Academy (SMCA) wards Bhaven Shah and Hriday Sheth set a record for India by winning a bronze medal each in the blitz format of World Schools Chess Championships 2017 that concluded at Iasi, Romania.
Bhaven, who represents Dhirubhai Ambani School and studies in standard XI, scored five out of possible seven points in the U- 17 category as he held some of the top rated players including the national champion of Peru, Quirhuayo Chumbe (2028 ELO points), as he raced towards a prestigious podium finish.
Another city chess player Hriday, who studies in fourth standard in the DY Patil School, scored 5.5points out of possible seven. Hriday’s brave display at such a young age though caught eyes of the experts and professionals.
A total 99 budding chess players from 15 countries took part in this ultimate championship in Romania.
Speaking on the thumping victories by the Indian boys, renowned coach FM Balaji Guttula was over the moon.
