Mumbai: Great Britain’s Emily Webley-Smith, seeded second, had to bow out before the barrage of forehand and double-handed drives of Tapei’s Ching-Wen HSU in the quarterfinals of the US $15,000 CCI-ITF Women’s tennis tournament on Wednesday.
The tie was full of fast-paced rallies in their almost two hours encounter, which in the ended with Ching prevailing at 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-1. Emily served hard and hit her forehands and doubles-handed backhand drives furiously from one corner to another, but then Ching was quite equal to the task as she not only chased with terrific speed, but also returned with equal power.
The first set was quite a nerve-wracking affair as it went to the tie-breaker. Both were unrelenting before Ching clinched it 7-4. However, the second set was totally dominated by the Britisher as she raced to 5-2 before winning it 6-3. The efforts, however, appeared to have drained out her energy as Ching went up 5-0 in the decider as Emily committed doubles galore and her drives often missing the lines.
After her fine showing on Tuesday, Rushmi Chakravarthi, the 36-year-old stalwart from Tamil Nadu, had to bow before the 19-year-old US born Indian Anamika Bhargava’s speed and power, who won 6-2, 6-2. The line up for the quarterfinals saw Delhi’s Riya Bhatia, the lone surviving qualifier, making the last eight grade by routing Vaniya Dangwal 6-1, 6-1. While third seeded Rishika Sunkara was taken the distance by Sharmada Balu before Sunkara triumphed 1-6, 6-4, 6-3, there was no stopping top seeded Prarthana Thombre, who outplayed Smriti Joon 6-2, 6-3.
