Mumbai : Defending champion Pankaj Pawar retained the men’s title, while Priti Khedekar won the women’s crown, in the Bombay YMCA Mumbai District Ranking Carrom Tournament.
Favourite Pawar prevailed over formidable Yogesh Dhongade 25-4, 25-9 in an exciting championship round between the Jain Irrigation duo, while Khedekar of Indian Navy shocked top seed Sangeeta Chandorkar of Reserve Bank of India 25-17, 25-10 in a tight women’s final.
“It is never easy to play against Sangeeta. I had to play an extraordinary game,” explained Khedekar. “I played to a plan and it worked.”
Pawar dominated the contest from the start and was rewarded for accuracy while enduring a strong challenge in the second game when Dhongade tried to force the decider in an intense battle for supremacy.
“If Yogesh gets an opening, anything can happen, so I had to take control from the start against a quality opponent,” explained Pawar, a former Asian and national champion. “I had to be as accurate as possible in pocketing and minimise the errors in order to stay ahead.”
