Pune: Aryan Goveas of India and Plobrung Plipuech of Thailand lifted the boys and the girls singles’ titles, respectively at the Gadre-MSLTA ITF Junior tennis championships here on Saturday.
In the boys’ final, Mumbai lad and fifth seeded Aryan Goveas toppled top seed Jay Clarke of Great Britain 7-6(6), 6-3 in an hour and 45 minutes, while second seed Plipuech upset top seeded compatriot Tamachan Momkoonthod 7-5, 6-4 to lift the girls title here at the Mhalunge Balewadi Tennis stadium.
Goveas, a standard XI student of Rizvi College Mumbai and a member of the MSLTA Vision programme, came up with six aces in the match. He broke his British rival in the second game of the second set after winning the first set via tie break.
Coached by Aditya Madkekar in Pune, Goveas played very well from the baseline, hitting a series of winners at the hard-serving Clarke.
It was the second win in a row for the Mumbai lad whose ranking will now move into around 180 in the world.
It turned out to be a bad day for Clarke as he and his Syrian partner Kareem Allaff went down to the Indian pair of Vashisht Cheruku and Sahil Deshmukh in the doubles final.
The Indian duo won 6-2, 6-3.
Plipuech, a member of the Thailand junior team, broke her compatriot’s serve in the 12th game of the first set and the ninth game of the second set to win the girls’ singles final in an hour and 47 minutes.
The doubles was won by Hsiang-Wei Huang of Taipei and Zeel Desai of India, who edged out Indo-British pair Vasanti Shinde and Georgina Axon 3-6, 6-3(10-6).
The singles winners got 60 ITF points, while the runners-up had to be content with 45 points. The doubles winners got 50 ITF points and runners-up 30 points.
