Pune: Fifty-two-year-old Sunita Kadam (name changed) has become the first woman in the nation to give birth to a triplet conceived via IVF at Saishree Hospital in Pune. The two are boys and a baby girl. Two infants were born healthy, while the third was a little weak, and was kept at the NICU. After a few days, the kid recovered.

It was not an easy journey to parenthood for the Kadams, as earlier also, they had tried to have a baby through IVF in Hyderabad and Pune hospitals. There was no outcome even after several attempts. “These are really happy moments for our family to have three babies in first attempt at Saishree Hospital in Pune,” Sunita said.

A triplet pregnancy after in-vitro fertilisation is a procedure-related complication that should be prevented by replacement of two embryos only. The obstetric outcome of the triplet pregnancy in our population indicates that the triplet pregnancy through IVF treatment have to be prevented. Selective embryo reduction is acceptable for a few patients only and cannot be seen as a solution.

The replacement of the three embryos results in triplet pregnancy in an unacceptably high percentage. Replacement of the two embryos only gives acceptable IVF results and is the method chosen in the IVF programme to prevent the triplet pregnancy. However, Sunita denied the foetal reduction and wanted to give birth to a triplet, which is rare.

Commenting on the outcome, the Saishree Hospital experts, Dr Yeshwant Mane and Dr Girish Pote, who have been practising the IVF treatment for years, said the IVF for twins or triplets requires transferring of dual or triple embryos into the womb, which reduces chances of failure, which otherwise is higher in single-embryo transfer or normal IVF.

“In this case, mother’s health and foetus’s well-being played a major role in the IVF success and birth of the triplet,” said Dr Pote, adding, “We have a great team here. We offer advanced treatment and facilities to patients.

We are now happy to announce we have achieved a feat of delivering 101 babies through IVF till December 2018.”The hospital started the IVF centre 16 months ago. Of the 101 babies, 40 singles (boy or girl), 29 twins and 1 triplets were born through IVF.
