Harry Emerson Fosdick wrote: “We possess by nature the factors out of which personality can be made. To organize them into effective personal life is every man’s primary responsibility.” Why do many say that Amitabh Bachchan is great, can act well and is maturing more and more with age? It is the inherent talent in him to project himself, project his personality in a favourable light. Maculae once said: “Popularity is power” and to be popular in the small or big world we live, the secret is that others should like us.
The way we look, the way we act, the way we walk, the way we impact on others sets our personality. The way we think controls our looks, actions and words. It is not an easy task to teach others to develop a good personality. It has to come from within. The best way to be popular is to get interested in other people’s interests. There is no better way to gain their attention than talking about their likes and dislikes. There are many people who make a living interviewing celebrities for a newspaper, radio or television. Their speciality is unfolding the personality of the one interviewed like peeling an onion. The interests of the interviewee is first studied in depth by the interviewer and focused upon. Everyone is wrapped up in himself or herself. They want to be liked and appreciated. Remember that it is impossible to be popular if a person is interested in himself only. Charles H. Parkhurst said: “The man who lives by himself and for himself is apt to be corrupted by the company he keeps.” We have to learn from others in order to make them like us. It is called ‘similar attitude’. For example, if you frown at a person; he will frown right back at you. It is like looking into a mirror when we converse with others. Their attitudes are a reflection of our attitudes. Popularity consists not in the holding of some high position of future office. It consists of doing great deeds with little means and the accomplishment of vast purposes from the small private ranks of life. To be popular one must bend down, humble himself and develop the ability to capture the hearts and imagination of others. Popularity is not at some far away place. It is here available now. Edmond Spencer said: “It is the mind, that maketh good or ill; that maketh the wretch or happy, rich or poor. All that we accomplish or fail to accomplish with our lives is the direct result of our thoughts.”
