17-yr-old had succumbed to injuries after being assaulted at remand home

Mumbai : All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) called the death of 17-year-old Amir Jamil, who succumbed to his injuries after he was assaulted in the David Sassoon Juvenile Home in Matunga, a communal incident. They have also alleged that such incidents rampantly occur at the juvenile home, and currently three other boys are facing similar abuse.

Shanul Sayed, the head of AIMIM in Mumbai, said, “Before Amir died, he gave us the names of three other boys who are facing abuse at the remand home. We have told this to the police, who have downplayed this angle.”

AIMIM leaders claimed none of the government’s representatives visited Jamil’s bereaved family. Sayed said, “If they were a non-Muslim family, the government would have given them compensation by now and many senior leaders would have visited them.” Sayed claimed this discrimination is purely based on religious issues and the government should be made answerable for this incident.

Amir Ahmed, who died at Nair Hospital on Thursday, was arrested for theft in April. A juvenile court sent him to the remand home in Matunga. His fellow inmates at the juvenile home demanded drugs and assaulted him severely. Amir’s family found out about his condition only after he came home on bail, on May 20. Amir was taken to Nair hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

AIMIM also alleged that such incidents of discrimination against Muslims have become more pronounced in the past one year.  He said “The minorities have always been unfairly treated and the worst part is these people are beginning to accept it as a part of their lives.”

Muslim body accuses  state govt of apathy

Mumbai : The Association for Muslim Professionals (AMP), a non-profit organisation working for the welfare of Indian Muslims, has claimed that in the past 9 months that the BJP government has come to power in Maharashtra, it has not come up with even a single pro-Muslim official statement.

While the organisation said that the Muslim community lags behind as its youth is not up to the mark to grab available opportunities, it also claimed that the situation for Muslims in the country is deteriorating by the day. They have alleged that some separatist elements within the government are responsible for this.

Speaking in light of recent incidents of discrimination against Muslims in Mumbai, Aamir Edresy, the president of AMP, said, “There is an urgent need to tackle the problem of Islamophobia that has crept into the minds of the people in this country. We are a friendly, helpful lot and are as much a part of this country as people from any other religion.”

Terming such incidents to be anti-democratic and anti-secular, Edresy said they completely spoil the social fabric and must be addressed by all involved communities together.
