Mumbai : The Bhoiwada police on Friday arrested a 28-year-old man for bludgeoning a footpath dweller to death, at Dadasaheb Phalke Road near Parel.
Nair Kishanchand Palni (40) was fast asleep when the accused Ajit Singh who was under the influence of alcohol, bludgeoned him with a stone. He first hit him on the leg and subsequently on the head.
Abdul Ganesh, a resident of the nearby Mithabhai chawl attempted to stop the attack that took place at around 1.30 am on Friday but was unable to do so. He then gave chase to the accused, as he tried to flee and caught him. In the meanwhile the police also arrived and took him away.
“Palni used to collect scrap around the city, whereas the accused, a native of Umaria district, Madhya Pradesh, worked in a firm in Pune, which he quit recently and then came to the city. A medical test confirmed that Singh was drunk and not in a stable state of mind,” said Senior Police Inspector of Bhoiwada police station Sunil Tondwalkar. He added, “There is no evidence that the two of them knew each other prior to the incident.” The police said that Palni’s mother stays in Raikhad district of Ahmedabad and has been informed of her son’s death.
