Mumbai : A 29-year-old Police Sub Inspector (PSI) Sandeep Pokarnikar from the Gamdevi police station committed suicide on Monday at his residence in Pratiksha Nagar, Sion by hanging himself from the ceiling. His body was found by other policemen living in his building.
Pokarnikar’s suicide came to light after his brother’s calls on his mobile continuously went unanswered. The duty officer at Gamdevi police station, API Norude too was calling him, as he hadn’t turned up for duty. At around 3 pm, after being contacted by Pokarnikar’s brother and Norude, other policemen living in the government quarters went to Pokarnikar’s flat and tried to open the door with a duplicate key. However, they could not get through as the door was bolted from inside.
They then had to break open the main door in order to enter the house. “Pokarnikar was found hanging from the ceiling. Prima facie the death has occurred due to hanging. However, he has an injury on the head too. We are investigating what could have caused that,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (Central Region) R D Shinde.
Pokarnikar did not leave a suicide note and the reason for his suicide remains unclear. He had hung himself in the bedroom of the 1BHK house. He was taken to Sion hospital where he was declared dead. The policemen are now waiting for the postmortem report to come.
“It is too early to speculate now. We will conduct a thorough investigation to find out what exactly occurred,” he said.
