Mumbai: Indian wrestler and Commonwealth gold medallist Narsingh Yadav, an assistant commissioner of police of the local arms unit of Mumbai Police, was suspended on Tuesday after he allegedly shared a dais with Congress candidate from Mumbai North West constituency on Sunday evening. Yadav was booked by Amboli Police under relevant sections of the Representation of the People (RP) Act for having campaigned in the elections despite being a police officer.

A senior police official said, “As per the law, no police officers are allowed to campaign for any political party. After verification of the allegations, the Election Commission was alerted about the incident with a report. We have booked Narsingh Yadav under relevant sections of the Representation of the People (RP) Act, according to which no member of a police force is allowed to influence voting.”

According to police sources, during a bandobast for Nirupam’s campaigning at Yadav Nagar in Andheri (W) on Sunday night, the Congress leader called the wrestler to share the stage with him. The other policemen deployed for the bandobast reported the incident to their seniors, who verified the allegations and a case was registered against Narsingh Yadav at Amboli police station on Monday evening.
