Mumbai : A 55-year-old woman saved her life by locking herself up in her bathroom, her immediate thinking saving her from being killed by an intruder who then fled away from her residence after taking jewellery worth Rs 1 lakh. The woman resides in the house with her daughter and grandson, but she was alone when the incident occurred.

The event came to light when Reena Das, the daughter of victim Laxmi Das, received a phone call informing her that her mother has been attacked at her residence in Room No 708, building No 3-C at Malwani Moreshwar Cooperative Housing Society in Kandivali (west) on Tuesday evening. Reena, who works in a company at Goregaon, immediately rushed to her house. When she reached home, Reena found her mother to be injured and bleeding, and so she immediately rushed her to Shatabdi Hospital for treatment.

According to Reena’s statement to the police, when she asked her mother about the incident, Laxmi said that around 5 pm, a man who claimed to be a back official knocked on the door. She refused to entertain him as she was alone in the house, but he asked for a glass of water.

When she started walking towards the kitchen to give him the water, the man pounced on her, banged her head against a wall and snatched her gold ornaments.

The accused then took a knife and when he tried to stab her, the victim blocked it with her hand, pushed her assailant and ran to the bathroom, where she locked herself.
