Mumbai: Although admissions to degree colleges are complete but we are still waiting for seats in well-known colleges, claim students. Students seeking admission for self-financed courses are on the waitlist at reputed colleges, even as seats are already full. The third merit list for degree courses was declared on June 26 and students had until June 29 to confirm their seats. But students are still hoping to secure a seat, while being waitlisted at sought-after colleges. They stand a chance only if a seat falls vacant in the event the original allottee withdraws their admission.
Students claim they want to try their luck and pursue a particular course from a particular college. Meghna Bir, a student, said, "I want to study Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) and I want to pursue it from a well-known college. There is no point in pursuing the course from a lesser known college, where the quality of education is compromised." In addition, students reveal self-financed courses are practical and creative, going beyond theoretical study. Student Noor Azad says, "Courses like media or management studies go beyond the syllabus of a book. I want to understand the practical approach, real-time challenges and creative barriers of the course. I would prefer to pursue it from a good college where the focus is on these aspects, instead of theoretical emphasis."
College authorities have informed students to secure seats and not be counting on waitlist admissions. Lauren Machado, a teacher said, "Waitlist admissions are subject to availability of seats. Students should realise everybody cannot secure seats in reputed colleges, as there are limited number of seats for all courses. Students can seek admission to other colleges instead of waiting and wasting an academic year." This year, the cut-offs for self-financed courses were high. Students faced a tough time getting seats in colleges of their choice. Also, colleges have been compelled to waitlist students after they received a large number of applications.
