Mumbai: ‘Caste Reservation’ is the major hurdle faced during admissions at various levels of education, claimed students. They demand the Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) should change rules and cater to the needs of students of the open category to create a secular state. Recently, students of postgraduate (PG) medical and dental courses staged protests for two weeks over Maratha quota reservation. Also, this reservation has now been introduced in the First Year Junior College (FYJC) admissions. Sixteen per cent seats are reserved under the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) which mainly functions as the Maratha quota. Ten per cent seats are reserved for the Economically Weak Sections (EWS) of the society.

We understand the BJP government favours Hindutva and supports the majority, but they cannot neglect the minorities, claimed students. Vineet Ghadge, a student, said, “We all know the Modi government is biased towards the Hindu majority, but education is equal for all. And if the government propagates secularism then it should cater to the needs of people of all caste and religion. We need equal opportunities while securing admissions as our merit speaks for itself in the education model.”

This is the second chance given to the government and they should focus on other ideologies, revealed students. Anjum Bora, a student, said, “The government has won by majority votes which means the people have given them a second chance. The government should use this opportunity to expand their horizons and eliminate communal differences. We want our admissions to be based on merit, social and economical conditions but not on caste or religion.”

Students are anxious if the government will abolish quota reservation. A student said, “We know the Marathas are a majority in our state, but their economic and social conditions are better off. They can afford fees and have a secure family environment so the quota privileges given to them like waiving of fees, low merit cut offs and special provisions do not make sense. Times have changed and certain rules need to be changed too.”
