Palghar : The Virar police last week successfully nabbed a 7-member gang of thieves that operated in Vasai Taluka. The gang was involved in various crimes like chain-snatching, cash thefts near bank, conning people and robberies.

This gang was active for the past 11 months and a lot of people had approached Virar police complaining about thefts. The gang used to operate in crowded places and always attacked individuals across ages and gave a perfect example of team work and had 100% success rate.

Naseer Baig (32), Rakesh Sarkaar (35), Indramani Yadav (40), Sameer Shaikh (22), Bablu Shaikh (29), Mohd Hussain Shaikh (29) and one more accused, all of whom are residents of Nalasopara, have been arrested and are currently in custody of the Virar police who are trying to understand the exact number of thefts executed by them. “This will certainly bring down criminal offences like chain-snatching, cash theft near banks and thefts done by conning people. We are trying to ascertain the number of thefts executed by them,” said a police official at Virar police station.

All of them had become friends over drinks at a local country joint and used to plan their activities over round of drinks. Since all of them were jobless they sought theft as their only source of income and used to do it professionally with meticulous planning and team work.

This particular operation, which involved around 10 police officers, required change of attire to nab these thieves. It was worked out very carefully by Virar police under the guidance of senior police officers. They had their men placed in crowded places with plastic bags full of blank papers (that gave a feel of cash) and tried to attract the thieves. They had increased their patrolling during peak hours at crowded places and during one such patrolling they encountered a commotion and found out that a man had apprehended a person who turned out to be a thief of that gang.

The accused have been remanded in police custody till November 21 and have been booked under IPC sections 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery), 395 (punishment for dacoity) and 34 (common intention) and further investigations are on.
