Crackdown launched in Mira Bhayandar, to be extended in entire Thane district
Bhayandar : If the ‘Police’ or ‘Press’ stickers on vehicles are any indication, there seems to be too many media persons and policemen whizzing on wheels in Mira Bhayandar. Concerned over the overwhelming number of vehicles illegally sporting press and also police signs, traffic wing of the Thane (rural) police has launched a drive against fake users.
In the first two days of the drive, a police team led by PI (Traffic) C Gundge has not only booked and fined over a dozen motorists under the relevant sections of the Motor Vehicle Act but also ensured that the stickers are ripped off with immediate effect.
The twin-city is swarming with vehicles sporting not only press, police stickers but also misleading ‘Human Rights’ name plates which often peddle influence by giving an impression that it is an official vehicle.
“To put an end to such misuse, a drive has already taken off in the Mira Road division and will soon be extended to other parts of the district,” said Thane (Rural) SP Rajesh Pradhan.
As per law nobody is allowed to sport any type of self-proclaiming stickers without prior RTO permission. Similarly, even genuine policemen can’t just paste a police sticker on their privately owned vehicles.
It may be recalled that a bike with a Mumbai Police sticker had recently rammed into a 53-year-old man in Mira Road. However, the rider turned out to be the son of a police constable. “The drive will continue for some time and then it will be conducted randomly,” Gundge said.
