The sex pervert had offered lift to the girl on his bike. She was returning from the school
Bhayandar : Less than 12 hours after the body of a 12-year-old schoolgirl was recovered from an isolated farmland, situated in the Sharja-Mori village near Vasai (Kaman taluka) on Sunday, sleuths of the Valiv police claimed to have solved the case. A 20-year-old village youth turned out to be the culprit, who allegedly raped and brutally murdered the innocent child after offering a lift to her on his bike.
The accused, identified as Rahul Gajanan Tumbda (20), has been arrested and booked under Sections 302, 376 and under Sections 4 and 8 of the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012. The girl, a Standard VII student of a zilla parishad school, had mysteriously disappeared while returning home from school on Thursday.
As a frantic search to find the girl failed, her parents registered a missing person’s complaint at the Valiv police station on Friday.
While the police were in the process of locating the girl, they received information about the body of a girl lying in a semi-nude condition at a farmland in the outskirts of the village. A police team reached the spot and after confirming the body was that of the missing girl, an investigating team, led by API Rani Puri, immediately swung into action. A sniffer dog squad, which was pressed into service, led the police team inside the village, raising a strong suspicion about the involvement of a local villager, who was apparently known to the girl.
Following further investigations, the police zeroed in on Tumbda, who was last seen with the girl.
After rounds of sustained interrogation, Tumbda, who works at a private industrial unit, spilled the beans and confessed to his crime. “The accused apparently offered a lift to the girl on his bike and forcefully took her to the crime spot where he brutally raped and suffocated her to death by firmly blocking her nose and mouth,” confirmed Sr PI Rajendra Mohite. API Rani Puri is investigating the case.
