Mumbai: Saki Naka Police on Thursday arrested from Uttar Pradesh (UP) a dreaded criminal, Afroz Shaikh aka Atiq Mohammad Rauf Shaikh, 22, who had four murder cases registered against him, and carried a bounty of Rs50,000 from Yadav Nagar, Saki Naka.

Atiq, a member of the Taukir gang, has 18 cases registered against him and was wanted by the UP Police for four murders, seven robberies, four extortion and two attempt-to-murder cases.

According to Saki Naka Police, they received information from their UP counterparts that Atiq was hiding in the house of his father’s friend in Yadav Nagar on Thursday morning.

Police nabbed him. “A team from Kotawali Nagar police has left for Mumbai and once they get here, we will hand over Atiq’s custody to them,” said an officer.

Atiq, a member of the Taukir gang from Pratapgad, had been on the run for the past few months. “A leader of the Taukir gang was killed in an encounter with UP Police. After the incident, Atiq felt he too was likely to face a similar fate. To escape this, he fled to Mumbai,” said an officer of Saki Naka Police.

Atiq’s father is a taxi driver who operates near the airport and lives in Saki Naka, but Atiq felt he was more likely to be caught if he stayed with his father and decided to hide at the house his father’s friend, as Afroz Shaikh, police said.
