Mumbai : A sessions court judge was at the receiving end after an accused in a dacoity case hurled a chappal at him on Tuesday. When the chappal missed its mark, the accused started hurling abuses at the judge.

The incident occurred around noon, when SV Patil was heading the bench in courtroom no 25. The accused identified as Madan Govind Chouhan was being presented in the court for a hearing in a dacoity case registered against him by RCF police in 2013.

Sources said that the accused, an undertrial lodged in Arthur Road Jail, was angry that his case was not being heard. “He was allegedly frustrated that his case was not coming for hearing and was being passed over repeatedly. Even on Monday his case was passed over and the next date for hearing announced; this enraged him,” said an officer of the Colaba Police station.

When the judge announced the next date for hearing, the accused suddenly threw the chappal he was wearing at the judge. When the chappal missed its mark, he started hurling abuses at the judge till he was escorted away.

The Colaba police, which has registered a case against Chouhan, have booked him under sections 353, 336 and 504 of the Indian Penal Code.

While there is no rule that an under trial or accused should not be allowed to wear any footwear inside the courtroom, due to previous such instances, the court has issued a directive against the same. Sources said when Chouhan was produced in court, he was not asked to remove his chappals.
