Thane: After two building collapse killed around 12 people in the last 15 days, authorities from Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation have finally woken up to carry out a survey for dilapidated and dangerous buildings built between 1994 and 1998.
Dr. Raja Dayani, Municipal Commissioner, UMC has formed one team each in four wards and asked them to carry out the survey and submit a report within three days.
After the collapse of slabs of two buildings, it was found that the buildings were constructed using Ulwe sand. Moreover, UMC has taken action against many illegal constructions by demolishing the slabs. The developers would reconstruct the same slab forcing tenants to get in and incurr the loss.
To avert any such incidents in the future, the authorities have formed teams in four wards. Dr Karuna Juikar, additional municipal commissioner is heading the ward 1 team, Ashok Naikwade, Deputy municipal commissioner (DMC) is heading ward 2 team, Priyanka Rajput, DMC is heading the ward 3 team and Madan Sonde, DMC is heading the ward 4 team. The team under their guidance will include assistant municipal commissioner, engineer, senior engineer including other staff from the ward.
Yuvraj Badane, Deputy Municipal Commissioner and Public Relation Officer of UMC confirmed about each team formed in four wards and said, "The team will carry out a survey of such dilapidated buildings and submit them in three days or action will be taken accordingly. The UMC had also put an advertisement in papers for vacancy of senior engineer for carrying out structural audits across the city."
