Even though the BJP organised celebrations after Uddhav Thackeray’s announcement to resign from the chief minister’s post, the party has not yet opened up its cards. The leader of opposition Devendra Fadnavis, who had led a delegation and urged Governor BS Koshyari to direct Thackeray to prove majority in the wake of rebellion, met the Governor again on Wednesday.

However, the party has not announced its strategy, including staking a claim for the formation of government. There is also no clarity whether the Eknath Shinde camp, which claims support of 39 MLAs, will keep its own identity as a separate group or merge with the BJP or the MNS or Prahar JanShakti to be part of the new combination needed for government formation.

The BJP’s core committee is expected to meet today and decide the future course of action. On its part, the Shinde camp, after returning from Goa, may hold its own meeting and also interact with the BJP on future moves.

A senior BJP leader told the Free Press Journal, “The BJP and Shinde camp will have to hold a series of interactive meetings to arrive at an understanding. Only after that a list of legislators will be prepared and submitted to the Governor while staking a claim.”

He said the Governor will then invite the BJP, provided the Shinde camp merges with it or with other parties to form the new government.

“After swearing in, the Governor will ask the new government to prove majority on the floor of the house,” he added.

He, however, admitted that BJP will release its plan after due consultation with the central leadership.
