Mumbai : The Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) police on Monday arrested two persons including a builder in connection with alleged forging of several government gazettes to get stamp duty waived off by wrongfully showing that a plot in Andheri belonged to the SRA. The case was registered in 2012.

The arrested accused have been identified as Nitin Samant who is the builder of the Samartha Erectors and Developers company and his employee Sunil Ambekar.

Kundalik Nigde, senior police inspector of the BKC police station, said “The duo had allegedly forged and submitted several government gazettes to the stamp duty office in BKC claiming that the said land for slum rehabilitation were under the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA). However, they weren’t under the SRA in 2012. They had done the same in order to get the stamp duty waived off. When a said project is under the SRA, the stamp duty is almost negligent.”

The said slum area is located in Amboli, Andheri. Earlier, the case had been registered with the Malad police station by an employee of the stamp duty office. The case was later transferred to the BKC police as the forged documents were submitted in the stamp duty office in BKC.

A case has been registered against the two men under sections 418 (Cheating with knowledge that wrongful loss may ensue to person whose interest offender is bound to protect), 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 467 (Forgery of valuable security, will, etc), 468 (Forgery for purpose of cheating) and 471 (Using as genuine a forged document or electronic record) of the Indian Penal Code.

“The men have been placed under arrest and have been remanded to police custody until March 18. We are further searching if they are in possession of more such forged documents,” Naigde added.
