Mumbai: Three persons have died and two were injured in separate incidents of tree collapse in the city since Thursday. In the wake of Cyclone Vayu, Mumbai and the surrounding areas have been receiving spells of rain amid strong winds. One person was severely injured when a tree branch fell on him near Vijaykar Wadi on SV Road in Malad around 6.30 am on Friday, according to an official of the disaster management unit of BMC. Shailesh Mohanlal Rathod, 38, succumbed to his injuries while he was being ferried to Shatabdi Hospital, said the official.
In another similar incident on Friday, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre employee Nitin Vishnu Shirvalkar, 43, died after the branch of a tree fell on him at Anushakti Nagar, BARC, in Govandi at 4.12 pm. Again, on Thursday, Anil Ghosalkar, 48, was critically injured when a Gulmohar tree collapsed on him at the Takshashila Cooperative Housing Society in Meghwadi, Jogeshwari, as he was washing a car on the society premises. He worked as a driver for one of the residents. He succumbed to his injuries at Holy Spirit Hospital on Friday, the official said.
According to BMC, the society had been issued a notice on April 22 by the Munici- pal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) K West office, to trim the overgrown trees on its premises. Also on Thursday, a mother and child were injured after being hit by falling tree branches in Andheri (E), near the international airport. The duo was rushed to RN Cooper Hospital. The boy, Simon Ballappa, 7, fractured his right hand while his mother Sulochana sustained head and shoulder injuries.
