Mumbai : Police should treat citizens as their “boss” to gain confidence and devote themselves in their service, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday said.

“To win public confidence, police should adopt the attitude of a servant and treat people as their boss,” Fadnavis said.

He was speaking after inaugurating a new building housing the Mumbai Police Headquarters.

The chief minister, who also holds the Home portfolio, said there was a need to provide more houses for police personnel. Several policemen are still residing in quarters built during the British era. These quarters were used by the British to house undertrials, Fadnavis said.

Considering the rise in number of police officers in the city, the government had taken a decision to construct the new building in the compound of the old police headquarters in Fort area of South Mumbai, an official release said.

The ground-plus-six-storey building houses the offices of the police commissioner, Crime Branch and other administrative departments of the force. It also has a gymnasium.

A CCTV command centre will be operated from the fifth floor of the building. The sixth floor will have a Police Welfare Centre and a conference hall, it said.

DGP Pravin Dixit, Mumbai Police Commissioner Ahmed Javed and other senior officers were present on the occasion.

Meanwhile, Fadnavis and Javed on Monday also launched two Twitter handles – @CPMumbaiPolice and @MumbaiPolice. “I welcome my team on Twitter @MumbaiPolice. We look forward to a stronger bond with the #Mumbaikars!” tweeted Javed.
