Mumbai : The Matunga police have arrested three people for posing as police officers and duping people. The accused, identified as Roshan Yadav, Iqbal Ansair and Santosh Patel, would lure people to a meet them under the pretext of selling gold biscuits at rates cheaper than market rates.
They would ask potential customers to meet at a specific location to discuss the deal. When the deal was about to be closed, two of their accomplices would pose as fake policemen and conduct a fake raid and flee with the money of the customers.
“The modus operandi included asking the buyer to bring the money at an isolated spot, generally in the area surrounding Five Gardens. While the discussion is under way, two of their accomplices would arrive at the spot as policemen and detain the accused. They would also take the money from the buyer and scare him,” said Balasaheb Kakad, senior inspector, Matunga police.
A victim who lost his money approached the Matunga police to lodge a complaint. It was then that the Crime Detection Squad started investigating the incident. The complainant had also shot a short video clip of the accused, which helped the officials recognise Yadav’s face.
“We tracked down Yadav and questioned him. Through him we identified the others and arrested them,” said Kakad.
All the accused have been booked under relevant sections of the IPC for impersonating a public servant and cheating. They have been remanded to police custody for further investigation.
