Mumbai: The Nawab family, the seventh floor residents of the Orchid Towers of the Campa Cola Compound, unlike others, has not packed a single object of their well-furnished flat. With no other place to go, the family feels it’s pointless to pack, rather they prefer going to jail which would at least ensure them a roof over their head.
The family booked the flat in the year 1985 and is one of the first occupants of the building. Now all that the family wants is a house or shelter in jail. Shabaz, being born and bought up in the very flat, finds it hard to believe that they have been asked to walk out of it. The family has no alternate accommodation and hence refuses to pack the belongings, as they don’t know where to go. Shabaz Nawab said, “I have never been outside South Mumbai. Having just completed my studies I do not have a steady source of income as well. Even if we look at the possibility of renting a flat, how are we supposed to pay the rent.” For the family after the demolition if buying a flat is not an option, renting a flat is also out of question.
