3 Die As State Reports 57 New Cases Of Swine Flu In A Day; Health Minister Appeals To People Not To Panic
Mumbai : Though 57 new cases of swine flu were detected across the State on Thursday of which three people died, State Public Health Minister Dr Deepak Sawant said the health administration is thoroughly equipped to control and cure the flu and appealed to people not to panic.
“There were 57 new cases of swine flu reported today (on Thursday), of which three people died. The deaths occurred in Mumbai, Pune and Latur. The patient who died in Mumbai had come from Gujarat,” Dr Sawant told reporters.
“With the newly detected cases, the number of swine flu cases across the state has gone up to 296. Till date, 43 deaths have been reported of which three were from Madhya Pradesh, and one each was from Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh,” Dr Sawant said. In all 120 patients are undergoing treatment at various hospitals in the state and 13 of them are reported to be serious, he added.
“The public health administration across the State is fully equipped to handle the swine flu cases. We have sufficient stock of medicines and other equipment,” he said and appealed to people not to panic. “We have ensured that all the district and sub district level hospitals across the State have sufficient stock of medicines and equipment,” he stressed.
Meanwhile, the public health department has released an advisory to prevent spread of flu. The administration has appealed to people not to visit public places if they suspect symptoms of flu. People should wash their hands with a soap, should have a healthy diet, have green leafy vegetables along with lemon and amla in diet, have enough rest and proper sleep, keep themselves hydrated, not spit in public places, hold handkerchief over mouth and nose while sneezing or coughing.

Clear And Present Danger
The city reported 14 new cases of swine flu on Thursday, of which 10 were from the city and four of visitors. This brings the total number of cases to a whopping 90, of which seven people have died. Incidentally, all the deaths have been that of visitors. A 47 year-old female from Gujarat who had been admitted to the Kokilaben Ambani hospital on January 25 succumbed to the deadly disease on Thursday. She had known symptoms of thyroid disorder and hypertension, a recurring
complication in swine flu cases. The cause of her death has been listed as severe H1N1 pneumonia. The rest of the patients are stable.
