Delay on the part of NCP and Congress, which wants to contest two of the three seats, is feared to affect prospects of Vasant Davkhare

Mumbai :While the Congress has not yet been able to finalise its strategy as well as the candidates for the legislative council polls, it is likely to be tough for the NCP to win Thane local body seats of the legislative council though Vasant Davkhare is trying hard to garner support from various quarters.

The Congress and the NCP are yet to come at any conclusion regarding the three seats of the legislative council. While the NCP wants to contest two of the three seats as the party would like both of their prominent leaders – council chairman Ramraje Nimbalkar and leader of opposition Dhananjay Munde – to be re-elected to the upper house, the Congress too wants two seats as they have to pacify a host of senior leaders who are hoping to take upper house route to enter the legislature yet again. A delay in the decision is feared to affect prospects of Davkhare, another NCP candidate contesting the Thane local bodies’ seats. According to the final list of council electorate, maximum voters are from the Thane Municipal Corporation followed by the Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation, both of which are controlled by the Shiv Sena. Out of the total 1,060 voters from six municipal corporations, one Zilla Parishad and seven municipal councils, the Shiv Sena-BJP combine has the maximum numbers, the voter’s list show.

The election scheduled on June 3 is being treated as the prestigious one from both the sides. Dawkhare has been able to secure support from Virar’s Thakur family, which is expected to fetch him votes from Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation. But, most of the other local bodies are being controlled by the Sena-BJP combine.

Though it was not all-well between the Shiv Sena and the BJP, the Sena leaders undertook a timely damage control exercise and have offered to share power at Ambarnath and Badlapur municipal councils. This exercise is expected to fill up the cracks within the alliance and pose considerable challenge to Davkhare, who has represented the constituency in the council for four times since 1992. Delay in the decision regarding Congress-NCP breakup of seats in council election on June 10, would have an adverse effect on June 3 election as the Congress members may not vote for Davkhare, a senior Congress leader told the FPJ.
