Kalyan: A 22-year-old snacks vendor, identified as Satish Khedekar, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself on a ceiling fan at his Ulhasnagar residence on Thursday night.

The incident took place when Satish was alone at home. His family members allegedly blamed a police constable, identified as Pawan Kedar, for harassing the victim and demanding extortion money of Rs 10k monthly for running snacks business.

The constable harassed him regularly due to his snacks and juice centre which used to remain open till late night. The victim identified as Satish Khedekar, was resident of Chopda court area in Ulhasnagar while he used to run his juice and sandwich shop in Hira Ghat area.

Family members and locals along with some political leaders approached to Central police station and demanded to lodge a complaint against constable Pawan Kedar. The Central police registered a case under Section 306 (Abetment of suicide) of Indian Penal Code. Sudhakar Suradkar, senior police inspector of Central police station said, “We booked a case after Satish’s family members loged a police case.

After probing the constable we will initiate action. At the same time we are also probing on the allegations made by Satish’s family are true.” The victim’s family also claimed that when Satish denied to pay the extortion money, Kedar had twice taken action against him for keeping the shop open till late night.

One of the victim’s relative said that family members staged a protest outside the police station while they refused to register a case on Friday. The relatives and locals had denied to take his body from Central hospital after post mortem as they demanded thorough probe and also asked the police to take action against the constable.

After the police assured the family of filing a case against Kedar, only then Satish’s body was taken for the last rites. Meanwhile, PI Sudhakar Suradkar said that they have also got to know that Satish had a debt of Rs 5 lakh, but there was no suicide note found at his residence.
