Mumbai : A 30-year-old woman from Kalyan succumbed to swine flu virus at KEM hospital on Monday. The cause of her death has been identified as Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). With this, the death toll of swine flu has reached 57 in the city, of which 29 are identified as out-station patients.
Meanwhile, the city reported 14 new swine flu cases on Monday taking the total count of swine flu cases to 41 in August alone.
The deceased was admitted to KEM Hospital on Saturday and was already started on Oseltamivir dosage since Friday. However, her health deteriorated in a couple of days and she succumbed to ARDS after she started feeling breathless. Following which, she breathed her last in KEM hospital, informed a civic health official.
City health experts claim that they are witnessing a surge in the swine flu cases which is turning out to be a cause of concern. They stated that city registering 14-16 new swine flu cases in a day is not a small issue and there is a need for awareness among people about the virus.
City doctors emphasise on prevention rather than taking treatment and medications. They add that people should get vaccinated against swine flu virus, especially those falling under the high risk category of pregnant women, elderly, hypertension and diabetes. Dr Om Srivastava, head of infectious diseases at Jaslok Hospital said, “High-risk category people are more vulnerable to fall prey to swine flu virus and therefore vaccines can prevent them from the virus.”
