Mumbai: Anti Narcotics Cell (ANC) Mumbai crime branch have arrested a big supplier of cannabis, Gangam Reddy, aged 30. An ANC officer said, “Reddy supplies cannabis to different cities, but he never comes out of Hyderabad. It is the first time he himself came to deliver the consignment of cannabis and was arrested. Police have seized 180 kilogrammes of cannabis worth Rs36 lakh.” Apart from Reddy, the ANC arrested his aide Akula Vyankateshvarallu, 33. The two have been booked under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. On Sunday both were produced in a court, which sent them to police custody till June 10.
The ANC’s Ghatkopar unit received information about a big consignment of cannabis coming to the city on Saturday. They laid a trap at Mankhurd Signal on Panvel-Sion Highway. ANC officers stopped a car with Telangana reegistration number. When checked, they found a large quantity of cannabis in the car. “Cannabis was stuffed carefully under the rear seat and in the boot in place of a spare wheel. To suppress the smell, car perfume was sprayed,” added the ANC officer. Reddy, a resident of Sikandrabad, Telangana, is a big supplier of cannabis. He supplies cannabis to dealers in Mumbai, Thane, Pune and Nashik districts. According to the ANC officer, “Reddy procures cannabis from Visakhapatnam and brings the consignment to Hyderabad, from where dealers take the delivery of cannabis.”
“It is the first time Reddy came out of Hyderabad. We succeeded in arresting him. This time around, the consignment is big and Reddy might wanted a good return,” he added.According to the figures, so far, Reddy has smuggled 10,000 kgs of cannabis into the city. The worth has been valued at more than Rs20 crore in the international drug market.
