Mumbai: Sunday night is believed to have been the coldest this year. While the minimum temperature in Santacruz plummeted to 12 degrees Celsius, in Colaba it was lower at 16 degrees Celsius. According to the Weather Bureau, this is 6.7 degrees below normal. (The normal temperature is the expected temperature for a period of five days, determined by taking the average over the last 10 to 20 years.)

The minimum normal temperature was expected to be 18.7 degrees Celsius in Santacruz while the maximum went down by 0.9 degrees Celsius.

VK Rajiv, Regional Director General at Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), said, “ The temperature is expected to dip further in the next 24 hours, after which it will gradually pick up before getting back to normal.”

The drop in the mercury level is due to the northerly winds which are moving over Maharashtra in a set pattern. This is after a ‘trough’ (disturbance in the wind) moved towards interiors of Maharashtra.
