Mumbai : The students’ union is opposed to UGC’s guidelines of ‘Uniform Span Period’ within which a student is allowed to qualify for a degree. According to it, a student has to finish his degree in the given term plus two years grace period. For example BA, BCom and BSc students have to finish the course within five years (3 years normal +two-year grace period). The students’ union has termed the rule unjust in the case of courses such as Arts, Commerce and Science.

UGC has observed that universities across the country had adopted varying span period within which a student is allowed to complete the programme to be qualified for a degree. In order to evolve a uniform policy, the commission had constituted a committee.

The committee came up with the new +2 years rule. In exceptional cases, university has the right to give one more chance. But in that case, the student will not get a grade irrespective of marks scored.

Education experts said this rule is good for processional courses such as engineering, medical and architecture as technology keeps changing but not for traditional courses such as arts, commerce and science which are basic courses.
