Mumbai : The stress management workshop, which was organized for over 45,000 strong Mumbai police officers and constables in May is proving helpful to these policemen as they are motivated to talk openly about their personal and professional problems. Considering the stress related problems that the policemen undergo, four to five psychiatrists have been appointed in each zone to tackle the problem.
The police officers had undergone psycho-analysis tests and were made to fill up a questionnaire to understand their mental and emotional state.
Following this, police officers who are facing stress issues are being provided with counselling and therapy. Dr Yusuf Matcheswalla, a city-based psychiatrist said, “There has been a huge difference in the attitude and approach of the police officers since the workshop. Police officers are now coming ahead and talking about their stress and depression issues. Also, out of the 30 zones, now the police department has minimum three psychiatrists for each zone so that policemen can approach the psychiatrists in their locality.”
Deputy Commissioner of police Dhananjay Kulkarni said, “those policemen who are undergoing stress are counselled to maintain their emotional balance. Also,
we are in talks with Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) to set-up a helpline for the policemen, which will enable them to discuss their issues at any given point of time.”
