Mumbai : The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared 542 dilapidated buildings across Mumbai as extremely dangerous and in need of immediate evacuation, ahead of the monsoon season. A majority of the buildings which have been declared extremely dangerous that is 116, lie in the area of Kurla.

These buildings include private buildings, residential complexes, buildings that belong to the BMC and the MHADA as well. The BMC has asked the residents of private buildings to vacate the premises at the earliest.

A majority of the buildings which have been declared extremely dangerous that is 116, lie in ward L, which is the area around Kurla, Chunabhatti, and the areas between Ghatkopar and Vikhroli. Whereas, ward ‘C’, has the least number of dilapidated buildings, only 1.

However, the ‘C’ ward has been the talk of the town lately, after a fire incident at Kalbadevi claimed the lives of three fire fighters of Mumbai’s fire brigade. This part of town is known to have many old structures, some of which are built in congested areas that are difficult to access due to tiny roads.

The BMC has said that in case of any mishap, it will not be held responsible for the accident, and the responsibility lies solely with the residents of the complex, as they have already been served a warning notice from the civic body.

Meanwhile, Snehal Ambekar, Mayor of Mumbai said “Only those people that reside in BMC owned complexes will be given alternate housing. The responsibility of providing housing facility to residents of private buildings belongs to the owners of those buildings.” She added that if these buildings take up repair work, the BMC will extend full co-operation to them, as per procedure.
