Mumbai : The state government has decided to take over private power generation plants to generate more energy to meet the state’s rising need for energy. Across the state, there are seven to 10 private generation plants that can generate 2000 megawatts (MW) but are defunct due to lack of power purchase agreement.

“In the next 15 days we are going to approve the proposal in Cabinet and after approval, we will start the procedure for acquisition,” said Chandrashekhar Bavankule, energy minister.

“We will enter into private-public partnerships (PPP) with the company contributing equity. The share of the equity will depend on the individual agreement with the company. The equity may be 51% of government or 49%,” he added. “With private players, we would also get power at cheaper rates.”
