Bhayandar: In another glaring example of its apathy towards environmental issues, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) stands exposed for submitting a deceptive status report in order to secure state government nod for constructing a development plan (DP) road passing through mangrove belt, coastal regulation zone (CRZ) and wetland in Bhayandar.
The matter came to light after the State’s Urban Development Department (UDD) in its notification clearly refused to accord sanction for the construction of a new 18.00 meter wide DP road at Moti Nagar in Bhayandar (west).
The civic administration had submitted the modification proposal in accordance to the provisions of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act. However, in sharp contrast to the actual ground realities. it was contended that that localities including Shashtri Nagar, Nehru Nagar, Ganesh Deval Nagar and Kranti Nagar were having 3 metre wide pathway as an access. Issued by section officer Ashok Khandekar, the notification clearly states that the rejection followed after enquiries and consultations with the Director of Town Planning which opined that the move was not suitable in the planning point of view.
“The MBMC’s move is nothing but a conspiracy to wipe out the eco-sensitive area and promote illegal slums. Responsible officials should be punished for their brazen attempt of trying to mislead the government,” said RTI activist Krishna Gupta.
