No casualties reported since the fire took place on a Sunday

Mumbai : A private electronic company in the Pawane Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) area in Navi Mumbai was gutted in a fire on Sunday. In a joint operation, the MIDC fire brigade along with other fire brigades took 11 hours to control the flames.

There was no report of any casualty Sony D.C. Manufacturing India Pvt Ltd, the electronic company concerned, since it was a Sunday, which is a weekly holiday, fire brigade officials said. The whole unit was gutted in the fire, causing huge losses to the company. The reason for the fire is yet to be ascertained and the MIDC fire brigade is investigating the matter.

The fire at the Sony unit took place early on Sunday morning. Officials said it was a ground-plus-two-storey structure with a glass façade, and it was difficult to understand the cause of the fire and control it.

Locals saw the fire break out around 7.30 am at the Sony plant, where CDs and DVDs are manufactured. MIDC fire brigade officials were immediately sent to the spot. The first floor had large supply of raw materials stored, mainly plastic and fiber for the manufacture of CDs, which caused the fire to spread rapidly, officials said.

“Due to the glass façade, MIDC fire brigade officials could not understand the extent of the fire and calculate its damage, which is why they requested the Thane and Navi Mumbai fire brigades for help. After 11 hours, the fire was brought under control,” said MIDC Fire Brigade Station Officer Surendra Chaudhari.

He added, “Two floors were totally gutted in the fire and the goods stored in the ground floor were damaged due to water.”
