Mumbai : The city reported six new swine flu cases on Thursday, taking the number of infected persons to 184 in July alone. The influenza virus has claimed 27 lives so far this year, of which sixteen deaths were reported in July. Meanwhile, the civic body has collected Leptospirosis samples from each ward to study the strain of the bacterium.
Civic body had sent Lepto samples to the Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC) to find out if there are any mutations and strain in the bacterium. The test results of Lepto samples stated that there are some changes in the current Lepto strain, following which the civic body has roped in state animal husbandry department to study different species and give deep insights as Lepto is a bacterial infection which spreads through animal urine when one comes in contact with contaminated water.
Lepto has so far claimed lives of 16 people in July alone and more than 75 cases have been registered in the city. Civic health officials want people to be aware about Lepto, swine flu, malaria and dengue as the virus is in circulation. They further emphasised on guar-ding against fever as all the diseases show early symptoms of fever, chills and muscle ache. Dr Minni Khetarpal, head of epidemi- ology cell at BMC, said, “Lepto and swine flu can be easily cured with one blood test, medication and treatment. Early diagnosis and treatment can help in fighting the disease and prevent from further complications.”
