Mumbai : Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar has made an appeal that people celebrate the Dahi Handi festival as usual.

“Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has responded very positively to the BJP delegation that met him last night. The police and the administration would be cooperative. We have requested them not to lodge cases against people celebrating the festival,” Shelar said.

“Do not have any misconceptions. Please contact police and the MCGM administration for permission to celebrate Dahi Handi. They would certainly cooperate,” Shelar said in his appeal.

The BJP delegation met the chief minister late last night to discuss the difficulties faced by the Dahi Hadi Utasv Mandal office bearers. He listened to all the demands and gave immediate instructions to the officials concerned, Shelar told reporters here on Wednesday.

“The government is of the view that the traditional festivals should be celebrated with a lot of joy. The government has awarded ‘adventure sport’ status to Dahi Handi to achieve this. Rules, too, have been formulated and now there is no confusion about that. It is easier now to honour the court orders to avoid any inconvenience to the common people and the festivals could be celebrated like they are every year by obtaining permission from the authorities,” Shelar said.

“Some of the officials were said to have been creating obstacles by raising unnecessary queries. When we brought that to the CM’s notice, he immediately gave directives to the proper authorities to ensure that the festivals are held normally,” he added.
