Mumbai : Due to under-graded education, teachers and poor facilities provided in BMC schools, the number of enrollments has been decreasing over the years. But in the last five years, the enrollment of students in municipal schools has decreased by 9 per cent, which reduces the number drastically by around 41,000 students, states a report by Praja Foundation on the state of municipal education in Mumbai.
Plus, the number of students taking admission to class 1 has alarmingly decreased in 2014-15, as only 62 students enrolled themselves in municipal schools, the report adds. The report is based on an analysis of the number of students who dropped out of municipal schools in Mumbai in the last five years and the reasons behind it.
According to the report, the BMC schools will see a further decrease of more than 41,000 students till 2018-19. “Going by the current trend, the day is not far when the municipal schools will have a greater number of teachers and other employees than students,” said Nitai Mehta, the founder and managing trustee of Praja Foundation.
A comparison between private schools and BMC schools shows the gap between the quality of education on comparable outcome indicators.
