Mumbai: Senior Police Inspector (PI) of Gamdevi police station has been suspended for failing to act against a dance bar in his area.  Gokulsingh Patil was suspended by a senior officer, after the Golden Goose bar and restaurant at Sleater road was raided the second time on April 27. He was found guilty in departmental inquiry after which he was suspended. On April 27, a raid was conducted by DCP Shivdeep Lande’s squad at the Golden Goose bar at Grant Road, where the police found eight bar ladies dancing in ‘obscene and vulgar’ manner. Police arrested 51, including 8 bar girls and 31 customers.

Prior to the second raid, on September 2018, this same dance bar was raided and a case was registered for obscene acts and songs under section 294 of the Indian Penal Code. After the first raid, the senior police inspector of Gamdevi had been asked to take measures to ensure such acts are not seen in the bars in his jurisdiction. However, within seven months Golden Goose was raided again, which has irked the seniors, said an official.

Mumbai police commissioner, Sanjay Barve, had already directed police officers to carry out surprise checks at all the bars and restaurants in the city. Recently a police sub inspector (PSI) and a constable, attached to the MIDC police station, Andheri, were suspended for not taking appropriate action against an illegal dance bar. Obscene dance is not permitted in dance bars according to the revised Maharashtra Prohibition of Obscene Dance in Hotels, Restaurant and Bar Rooms and Protection of Dignity of Women (Working therein) Act, 2016.
