Mumbai : The Shiv Sena has decided to continue its opposition to the Jaitapur nuclear plant after a meeting at Matoshree on Thursday noon. On Wednesday, all Shiv Sena MPs met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and made out a strong case against the Jaitapur nuclear power plant, demanding that the 9900 MW project be scrapped summarily.

On Thursday, senior Shiv Sena leaders had a meeting with Uddhav Thackeray at his residence Matoshree where they decided to oppose the project at the micro level.  Party leaders Sanjay Raut, Arvind Sawant, Subhash Desai and Ramdas Kadam were present on the occasion.

Modi had reportedly told the Sena delegation that they should not oppose the project because it would be beneficial for the country as it would bring in foreign investment. “A Shiv Sena delegation will soon meet the Prime Minister again and convey our stand. If Germany can discontinue nuclear power projects, why can’t we do the same? We will not let Jaitapur become Fukushima at any cost,” said Uddhav. “There are field reports warning us that the project could lead to tsunami and earthquakes. That radiation and emissions from nuclear power plants adversely affects on human life,” Thackeray further said.

“If the Chief Minister says this project has reached a stage from where it cannot go back, he should first at least have a discussion with us on it,” Thackeray said.

Sena leder Aditya Thackeray also tweeted on the issue.  “Nuclear energy is neither clean, nor green and its waste has no proper form of disposal after decades of its use, world over. Nuclear energy is a technology that is refused by countries like Germany, Switzerland, USA, Japan and many other developed nations. What is of great concern is why is our nation accepting the refuse of the most advanced countries of the world- nuclear technology.” .

Industry Minister Subhash Desai also echoed Uddhav’s stand opposing the Jaitapur project. “The motto of Shiv Sena is ‘of the people and for the people’. Our party president Uddhav has always opposed anything which is not in the interest of people of Mumbai and Maharashtra,” Desai said.
