Mumbai : A Shiv Sena Corporator from Mulund, Nandkumar Vaity, has been accused of extortion by an insurance agent, Janak Bhanushali.
The complaint was registered at Navghar police station on Tuesday after Nandkumar and his brother, Uday Vaity, allegedly demanded Rs 2 lakh from Bhanushali.
According to Bhanushali, two friends of his, Jayesh Bhanushali and Baba Saheb were transporting food grains in their two tempos from Vashi to Dahisar on Monday night when they were stopped near Airoli toll naka by the Vaity siblings.
Since the two drivers had not paid Octroi duty for their tempos, Vaity demanded money from them. Having no proof that Nandkumar belonged to the vigilance department, the two called their friend Bhanushali who lives in Vikhroli.
When Bhanushali reached the spot at around 9.45 pm and spoke to Nandkumar he came to know that the latter is a corporator from Mulund.
“Although the actual fine came up to only around Rs 35,000 they demanded Rs 2 lakh from me and threatened me with dire consequences if I did not pay. Since they did not belong to the vigilance department and as such had no right to demand money from me, I registered a complaint against them,” Bhanushali said.
Besides Nandkumar and Uday, there were eight to ten other people who have been booked by the police under Section 387 (extortion) of the Indian Penal Code.
According to police inspector Sampat Munde, the accused do not have any past cases registered against them. Meanwhile, the two tempos were later handed over to the vigilance department post midnight on Monday.
